my livelihood depends on the CMS I use..
Joomla! I design joomla templates and convert regular templates to joomla ones... in addition to that most of our income depends on selling components that are used on a Joomla! CMS, now there's an issue with the license.. Joomla is developed and distributed open source.. meaning free for all to change and use.. the components/extensions we make are sold under a commercial license. Now they are thinking of scrapping the bit in the license that allows developers to sell components/extensions. I'm so pissed off with this.. So many developers put time and effort into making extensions for Joomla! and this furthers Joomla's dvelopment in addition to making money for the developers themselves.. do they honestly think that making the whole thing fully open source would move Joomla along? I think developers will abandon Joomla in favour of a more lucrative CMS. And what makes it really fncked up.. is that the people who wish to do this don't even rely on Joomla as a source of income.. for fnck's sake... how can you take away someone's livelihood for an idealism... "OPEN SOURCE MATTERS" - I agree that open source matters but to a certain extent.. who would spend hours of time making new extensions for free? Joomla needs developers who have the ingenuity to come up with new things and these developers need to get paid somehow... yeah there's web-design using the Joomla CMS.. but there are so many hours put into it with little return. Now the main reason they want to do this is they simply want the commercial components to be free.. so Joomla! can move on and develop into something bigger and better... what they don't realise is that you can't come up with that kind of product unless you commit enormous amounts of time in it.. and who's going to want to do that for free??! What I think they should do is have some kind of quota for developers who sell commercial extensions.. that for every commercial extension, they should make so many open source ones.. fijiwebdesign has come up with a lot of free components and have only one commercial one.. IT IS NOT RIGHT FOR DEVELOPERS TO HAVE THEIR LIVELIHOOD TAKEN AWAY!! I guess this is a lesson learnt.. that I shouldn't put too much time and effort into one thing... it's always changing and if you can't adjust you drown..
